Dieser Brauch wurde Mitte des 19. Jhs. eingeführt. Am Christmas Eve - Heiligabend, der in Großbritannien und Irland ein normaler Werktag ist, hängen Kinder vor dem Schlafengehen Christmas stockings - strumpfförmige Tüten oder auch Kopfkissenbezüge auf, damit diese in der Nacht mit Geschenken gefüllt werden. Am Christmas Day, dem 25. Dezember, gibt es bei den meisten Familien einen mit Brät gefüllten Truthahn, mit Röstkartoffeln und Preiselbeersoße. Anschließend gibt es den Christmas pudding oder plum pudding, einen im Wasserbad gegarten Kuchen mit Korinthen, Rosinen und Sultaninen. Christmas crackers, eine weitere britische Erfindung Mitte des 19. Jhs., sind verzierte Papprollen mit einem kleinen Geschenk in der Mitte, einem witzigen Spruch und einer Papierkrone. Sie werden meist während des Mittagessens von jeweils zwei Personen auseinandergerissen. -
